F1 2009 Race 1: Australia

A thrilling start to the F1 season with 3 teams in with a chance of winning the race going into the closing stages.

Barrichello had a poor start from 2nd on the grid and slipped down to 7th and then causing an incident involving several cars but he escaped with nothing more than a slight knock on his front wing.

Ferrari had awful day, starting on the wrong tyres and then both of them having accidents. With both of them failing to finish.

Toyota had to start from the Pitlane after the rear wing was ruled illegal after qualifying.

Kazuki Nakajima crashed out between turns four and five on Lap 18 which resulted in 5 laps of rolling around by the safety car, when the action resumed on lap 23 Nelson Piquet Jr spun out on the 1st corner blaming a brake problem.

In the closing stages Button was on the weaker tyres and Kubica in the BMW Sauber was closing quickly on Vettel’s Red Bull and in a moment of madness on Lap 55 Kubica and Vettel collide and damage was taken to both cars. On the next corner Kubica went spinning off into the wall and Vettel went into the barrier leaving bits of cars all over the track and the saftey car back out with just 3 laps remaining.

The safety car pulled in on the final corner allowing the cars to cross the line to take the chequered flag and handing Jenson Button his 2nd career win and a maiden victory for the Brawn GP team
