At 10:38pm AKDT Sunday evening, Mt. Redoubt erupted, sending an initial ash plume 50,000 feet into the frigid Alaska spring sky. This active volcano located some 140 miles southwest of Anchorage has been rumbling since January.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory website has put Redubt on Red Alert.

RED: Eruption is imminent with significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere likely OR eruption is underway or suspected with significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere [ash-plume height specified, if possible].

WARNING: Hazardous eruption is imminent, underway, or suspected.

If Redoubt does erupt, residents and visiting tourists on the nearby Kenai Peninsula, and perhaps even in Anchorage, might experience one or two millimeters of ash fall.

“That’s not a lot, but it’s enough to be a distraction and cause some havoc,” Wallace said.
