F1 rule changes… why!?

With less than 10 days to go to the start of the 2009 Formula One season,  the FIA have decided to change the rules with regard to how the overall champion is decided.

It no longer matters how many points you get in the season, it all comes down to who wins the most races! Is it a fair way to decide a winner?

While the medals have been abandoned, the new system delivers on Ecclestone’s wish of rewarding the driver with the most victories.

The F1 chief believes the new system will be a success and will also encourage overtaking.

“If you’re in the lead and I’m second, I wouldn’t want to risk falling off the circuit or doing something stupid to get two points,” Ecclestone told BBC Radio Five Live.

“The decision was unanimously agreed by the World Council. But we will leave all points in all of the other championships as they are at the moment.

“If I need a gold medal to win the championship, I will overtake. It’s just not on that someone can win the championship without winning a race.”

Will these changes make the racing more interesting? Only time will tell but i’m not convinced yet.

Jim Clark would have won a total of 4 World Titles.

As most of you will know if this rule was in place last season then Lewis Hamilton would not have been crowned champion, that is not the only time the ‘champion’ would not have won. The bbc have worked out that under the new system 13 previous champions would have gone to a different driver.

The late Scottish driver Jim Clark would have claimed a total of 4 World titles if they had always used these rules.

Do any other sports (does Formula One even count as a sport?) use a system where it’s all about who wins most and not who is most consistent? Can you imagine the Tour de France declaring that this years tour will be won be the person that claims most stage victories!?
